UPDATE: As of 4:45 PM on October 22, 2018 Tropical Depression Yutu is now Tropical Storm Yutu
(Guam) – Tropical Depression Yutu was located 855 east-southeast of Guam this morning.
Yutu is developing northwest of Pohnpei and is expected to pass North of Saipan as a typhoon on Thursday. No damaging winds are expected to hit Guam, but we are expecting winds of 25-30 miles-per-hour during its closest point of approach which is predicted to be possibly on Thursday Morning.
According to NWS’s Chip Guard, the track is headed towards the Northern Marianas Islands, just towards the north of Saipan, and Guam is just outside the center of the track. 35 knot winds are going to get fairly close to the island and NWS is going to make a decision tonight whether Guam will go to a tropical storm watch.
The National Weather Service anticipates issuing a typhoon watch for Saipan and Tinian. An average of 2-3 inches of rain is expected on Guam during the passage of Yutu. This could be more if the storm moves south, or less if it keeps on going further north.
