Guam – GTA TeleGuam today announced the launch of the 2012 GTA Phonebook Round Up recycling program in partnership with iRecycle, Soil and Water Conservation Northern District, Department of Agriculture, and the Chamorro Land Trust.
The contest is open to any public, private, or federal school on Guam and students will have a chance to win cash prizes totaling $10,000 when they collect outdated phonebooks from now until March 31, 2012.  The outdated phone books are shredded, turned into usable recycled materials, and donated to local farmers for use as filler and mulching.

Cora Yanger-Bejado, managing director of marketing and communications at GTA said, “The GTA Phonebook Round Up program has been a success every year because it promotes a greener Guam by keeping the phonebooks out of the landfill and also gives Guam’s students the chance to win cash prizes which can be used for needs within the schools.”

For the past three years, Guam’s schools have rounded up thousands of phonebooks and received cash donations as a reward based on the number of books collected per school.  Past Phonebook Round Up grand prize winners include George Washington High School, Astumbo Middle School, and Upi Elementary School.

iRecycle and other program partners have been instrumental in the Phonebook Round Up through the collection of books from each of the participating schools as well as coordination in the shredding and distribution of the recycled materials.
