VIDEO: Guahan Academy Expects to Meet Goal of 500 Pupils For 2013/2014 School Year

Guam – Guahan Academy Charter School is now open for enrollment.  The school will offer kindergarten through eighth grade and a freshman academy beginning this fall.

Director Donna Dwiggins says the school is reaching out for new enrollees as well as reviewing an already existing list of potential students now that a facility has been identified for the school open this coming August.

“We’re continuing to get calls everyday,” Dwiggins told PNC. “We have someone answering the phone and we’re taking information over the line and we also have three other people four other people involved with going down that list of existing names and reconfirming with them”

The school was approved by the charter school council in 2010 but has struggled to open since them because of funding and facilities challenges. Now that a lease has been secured in Tiyan (just outside the fence from Untalan Middle School’s temporary campus) Dwiggins is confident that the school will reach its goal of 500 pupils

The charter school will be funded on a per pupil basis with $5,500 dollars coming out of the Department of Education’s budget to run the school. Its not just students the publicly funded school could be taking from DOE, teachers are also being recruited. DOE Superintendent Jon Fernandez says he’s not yet sure what the impact will be on DOE’s 40 schools but he’s watching the situation.

“We are concerned about staffing of course,” Fernandez told PNC. “I mean we we don’t have a very robust workforce teacher workforce in terms of the supply of teachers so we’ll monitor the teachers who are expressing an intent to move over to the charter school and work very hard to make sure that their places are filled.”
