Guam - Young singers and actors are invited to step up and audition to be a part of the local production of the award-winning musical, Les Misérables.

World Theater Productions and Step Up Entertainment & Dance Company are putting together their first musical production with an all-student cast. Les Misérables School Edition Guam, through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), will be presented in the fall of this year. High school, middle school, and elementary school students are encouraged to audition this weekend, regardless of their level of experience. WTP Marketing Director Martin Estabillo shared with PNC what will be required of auditionees.

"Auditions will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sand Castle Guam, and this is for high school, middle school, and elementary school students. Auditionees are asked to bring a headshot, resume, and sheet music, and are asked to prepare a song, and to wear comfortable clothes to move around in," Estabillo said. "Each auditionee will have his or her own private audition with our audition panel. And they will be given 5 to 10 minutes per audition."

Only a piano accompanist will be available during auditions, so auditionees are asked to bring sheet music for the accompanist, or opt to sing a cappella. Minus ones and personal MP3 device will not be permitted. The presenters want the youth to experience how auditions and musicals are run in the "real world" to give them valuable experience they can add to their portfolio should they choose to pursue musical theater training or careers in the future.

Also part of the Guam production team are Executive Producer/Choreographer Margie Dancel and Orchestral Director Maximo Ronquillo, Jr.  WTP will be bringing in guest artists to be part of their creative team for the production. Jojo Urquico is the show’s artistic director, who has worked with the composers of the musical, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil. Germany-based actress, Lanie Sumalinog, and costume designer Aviad Arik Herman will be sharing their talents and experiences with the cast.

There are about 40 to 50 on-stage roles to fill, so everyone is encouraged to audition. Executive Producer Shelly Calvo says even the audition process is a great experience for the students. "There’s a difference in the way we’re actually calling this audition because this is the professional way. We get to train people to the real theater world, so if they ever have the opportunity to go somewhere else and do mainstream theater outside Guam, they know exactly what to do," Calvo shared.

A portion of the proceeds of Les Misérables School Edition Guam will benefit the Guam Homeless Coalition. Off-stage positions are also available, including lighting and sound crew, makeup artists, costume makers, and stage managers.  Sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are also open.
