Island Eye Center has just brought in brand-new equipment to offer the most advanced visual corrective procedures.

Guam - Laser vision correction has been around for 30 years, and Lasik eye surgery has been performed on Guam for over four years now. Island Eye Center has just brought in brand-new equipment to offer the most advanced visual corrective procedures.

Island Eye Center officially opened their Lasik center in 2013, but cornea specialist Dr. Charles Flowers says an upgraded laser was just purchased by the clinic, making their state-of-the-art system on par with the rest of the world. Dr. Flowers, who has been performing Lasik surgery for 10 years, says the procedure is quick and virtually painless.

"Lasik is basically a procedure in which we correct your vision so you can see without glasses or contact lenses," Dr. Flowers explained. "Instead of wearing glasses or contacts, we can modify the shape of your lens, of your eye, so that it actually can correct for that focusing abnormality... This procedure only takes about 20 minutes – about 10 minutes per eye. We numb your eyes, so you don’t really feel anything."

While you have to be at least 18 years old to get the surgery, Dr. Flowers recommends waiting until your prescription stops changing, which is usually around the mid-20s. But a quick enhancement procedure can be performed should patients undergo Lasik surgery before their prescription plateaus. Dr. Flowers told PNC, "Once you hit that plateau, and we correct your vision, theoretically you’re corrected for life... Normally, if you need a little enhancement, let’s say you have a little residual prescription, that will manifest within the first year. So, if you do need it, we’ll do an enhancement, and that’s included in the fee."

The cost of a bilateral procedure is around $4,500 and is not covered by insurance. However, the clinic offers discounts, including military discounts, and financing is available through local banks and credit unions.
