Medical examiner confirms spearfisherman death due to drowning

Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola performed the autopsy on 28-year-old Eric Shane Santiago.

Guam - Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola performed the autopsy on the spearfisherman pulled out of the waters of Umatac Bay on Monday night.

The man, identified as 28-year-old Eric Shane Santiago, died of asphyxia due to drowning. Dr. Espinola adds there were no other injuries.

Shortly after the Guam History and Chamorro Heritage Day Festival drew to a close on Monday night, the Guam Fire Department responded to a report from Santiago’s family. Relatives were expecting Santiago to return from spearfishing at sundown. His body was recovered by divers at 9:30 p.m.
