VIDEO: Guam Energy Office Disburses Recycling Bins to GovGuam Agencies

Guam News - Guam News

Guam- Recycling aluminum cans and plastic bottles just became easier for the Government of Guam.

The Guam Energy Office called various agency representatives today as it began distributing brand new 50 gallon recycling containers. Director Pete Calvo says they spent $36 thousand dollars in ARRA grant funding to obtain 200 blue bins. He mentions the containers will be going to high traffic customer areas within GovGuam. About 71 of 100 sets are being disbursed and the remaining bins will be used for big events, such as the Liberation Day Parade. Calvo notes the bins are just one example of showing the public that the government is serious about recycling.

“It's better for Guam for us to save that material out of the landfill so we can prolong the life of the landfill” said Calvo. “And also in recycling, it takes less energy to re-process these cans, to re-process these plastics for other uses. It's good for Guam and it's good for you. So we hope that people get that fever to recycle.”

Calvo adds it is up to each agency and department to decide how they want to dispose of the recyclables. Some agencies have already expressed donating aluminum cans to various schools, while others are finding ways to generate revenue from recycling to promote their programs.
