GRRP Calls on U.S. Justice Department to Investigate Alleged Illegal Leachate Discharges at Layon Landfill

Guam News - Guam News

Guam - Guam Resource Recovery Partners [GRRP] is calling on the U.S. Justice Department to investigate "the management of the Layon landfill for apparent violations of the Federal Clean Water Act."

In a letter dated Monday, September 10, GRRP claims that the Federal receiver, Gershman, Brickner & Bratton [GBB] has been "improperly disposing leachate from the Layon landfill."

The letter claims that "the landfill has been, and possibly still is, directing its leachate into the Inarajan Waste Water Treatment Plant ... which then discharges the effluent into the Pacific Ocean."

GWA Spokeswoman Heidi Ballendorf today [Wednesday] issued a statement denying that un-treated lechate is being discharged into the ocean.

GRRP's letter to the U.S. Justice Department concludes with a request "that you investigate the matter further and determine corrective action to include appropriate administrative or criminal penalties."
