Dizon's Opposition to CISPA Reported in Global Business Newspaper

Guam News - Guam News

Guam - The Democratic challenger for the Guam delegate's seat, Karl Dizon, has issued a release which notes that a "global business newspaper", the IBTimes,  is reporting on his opposition to Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA).

Dizon posted his opposition to CISPA on the social media website "Reddit." In his posting, Dizon is critical of incumbent Guam Delegate Madeleine Bordallo's support of CISPA.

In a release, Dizon states that “CISPA would have threatened Internet privacy for millions of Americans across the country including all of us here in Guam.” And he adds that if he is elected Guam Delegate "I will ensure that CISPA and other bills like it are defeated in Congress. Cybersecurity continues to be a priority, but it must never threaten the American people’s freedom to voice their thoughts online.”

DIZON CAMPAIGN’S OPPOSITION TO CISPA BRINGS GUAM POLITICS TO INTERNATIONAL LIMELIGHT

TAMUNING, GU, July 22, 2012 - Democratic candidate Karlo Dizon’s historic congressional run has been making waves as it transcends the sphere of local media and makes national news this week. The opinions expressed in a post on Dizon’s opposition to Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) posted last week on link-sharing website Reddit has garnered national attention with an International Business Times feature article published today.

IBTimes, an online global business newspaper, featured an article (“Redditor Karlo Dizon Goes For The ‘Biggest Upset Victory’ In Guam Delegate Race, Using New Technology To Reshape Island Politics”) on Dizon’s campaign, specifically its use of social online media to promote political
agenda. The article was largely favorable in light of the campaign’s promotion of freedom of information.

“But perhaps his most innovative initiative is his use of Reddit, the social news website that lets users submit content that is later ranked by other readers. The higher the ranking, the more sticky the content. An addicted Redditor for three years, Dizon’s post last week about his filing for candidacy landed near the top of Reddit's politics section. With this substantial exposure [...] Dizon signed up new volunteers and enjoyed a wave of small donations,” stated the IBTimes article.

Reddit is the ninth most visited website in the world by web traffic ranking and statistics from Alexa.

The Reddit post of significance, an op-ed by redditor NotKarloDizon posted on July 14, spoke of a 27-year-old’s bid for Guam Delegate to Congress and this candidate’s opposition to CISPA and, more importantly, the incumbent’s support of CISPA, which is a proposed law that facilitates online
information sharing between the U.S. government and certain technology and manufacturing companies. The post became Reddit’s top story for the day, with over 1,000 comments and viewership of 1.6 million subscribers, and subsequently drew supporters to Dizon’s campaign. Its popularity in many technology consumer demographics caught media attention, spurring coverage by IBTimes.

“CISPA would have threatened Internet privacy for millions of Americans across the country including all of us here in Guam,” Dizon said. “The Delegate should have explained her position to our community and supported the national Democrats who rejected the law.”

“The Internet is the freest means of communication in the world today. It has become integral to public discourse, which in turn is fundamental to any democracy,” Dizon added. “If elected I will ensure that CISPA and other bills like it are defeated in Congress. Cybersecurity continues to be a
priority, but it must never threaten the American people’s freedom to voice their thoughts online.”

The Committee to Elect Karlo Dizon for Congress is a grassroots organization comprising concerned citizens working towards a new way forward.
