The school has been locked up since the Guam Education Board closed it in June because of the high per pupil cost to run the school. Umatac Mayor Dean Sanchez first asked the Governor and the Superintendent of the Department of Education to hand over the keys in July. At that time legislation was still pending that could have reopened the facility for the school year which is now underway.
This morning Governor Calvo said he was handing the keys over to the community so they can decide how to use the building. Mayor Sanchez told PNC that he doesn't have any plans set for the facility yet but primarily asked for the keys so that he and other members of the village can make sure the building is properly maintained.
A bill currently before the legislature would appropriate $100,000 to operate F.Q. Sanchez as an Academy Charter Schools. The students who had been attending F.Q. Sanchez have been moved to Merizo Elementary School.
