BREAKING: Possible tsunami threat to Guam due to 8.2 earthquake in Mexico

A tsunami advisory may be issued at a later time for Guam and the Marianas.

Guam – Guam Homeland Security is warning that the island could be under a tsunami threat as a result of an 8.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Mexico Friday.

“The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center advises a possible tsunami threat to Guam and the CNMI is possible but this is still under investigation,” said Homeland Security Spokesperson Jenna Gaminde.

“The public is advised to stay alert for further information. There may be a possibility that a tsunami watch, advisory or warning could be issued later for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan,” she added.

The earthquake was reported at 2:49 pm ChST 87km south west of Pijijiapan, Mexico with a depth of 69.7 km.
